Stranger Things is a show Stranger Things Biking through the woods shirt, and that leads me to wonder if casual viewers will be more generous to the evidence of familiarity and sluggishness that I experienced. I spent more than half the season thinking Stranger Things might be a show doomed by a refusal, in Coca-Cola terms, to break from its beloved recipe and then the last couple episodes thinking it was a season explicitly about that refusal, representing a turning of the corner. Expect very few of these reservations to get in the way of holiday-weekend bingeing of this too-long-absent series. There’s enough intrigue in the stripped-bare skeleton of O’Malley’s book to keep The Rook casually watchable, but even those who haven’t read the tome will be able to sense that in a show this gloomy and conventional, opportunities for more colorful characterization and plotting must have been neglected.
